Couples therapy is for partners of all types. Couples can be married, dating, separated, living together, living in separate homes, have children or not, etc. You define what your couple is. In couples therapy, your therapist works with both members of the couple at once, in a single session, to assess relationship goals; strengths, areas for growth, and significant problem points within the relationship; interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution style.
The therapist provides an objective viewpoint to offer guidance and feedback for how to coexist in between sessions in a productive manner as well as teaching skills to foster strengths and improve any problem areas. At times, individual therapy may be recommended for one or both members of the couple. In this case, a different therapist would be recommended to provide the individual therapy so that the therapeutic relationship between therapist/couple can remain unbiased and have clear boundaries kept.
